Interchange Control Enveloping Structure
Enveloping Rules

  1. The ISA and IEA are a paired set of segments and must be used together. The GS and GE are a paired set of segments and must be used together. The ST and SE are a paired set of segments and must be used together.
  2. An ISA segment must be the first segment of each envelope or be preceded by an IEA.
  3. A GS segment starts a group of related transactions as defined by Appendix C of AIAG manual C-3. It must be preceded by an ISA or GE segment.
  4. A ST segment identifies the specific transaction set to follow as defined by Appendix C of AIAG manual C-3. It must be preceded by a GS or an SE segment.
  5. A SE segment indentifies the end of a specific transaction as identified above. A SE must be followed by a ST or a GE segment.
  6. A GE segment must be preceded by a SE and followed by a GS or IEA segment.
  7. An IEA segment must be the last of each envelope.
  8. There are certain required control numbers and counts to be taken for each electronic envelope. These requirements are started with the element definitions of each specific layer of enveloping. (Refer to the segment guidelines for specifics as required.)
